Thermally Induced Accelerated Landslides

The thermally-induced acceleration phenomena affecting landslides are modelled in this work. The thermo-mechanical-approach presented by Pinyol et al. (2018)[1] and implemented in a u-p based MPM formulation, has been developed and implemented in the v-w based MPM formulation in Anura3D. The implementation requires to overcome the pathological dependence of the friction work generation with the computational mesh element size. It involves to solve a local equilibrium for heat and liquid mass balance at the material point level. Thermal pressurization at shear band, resulting from the dissipation of the frictional work in heat, is modelled in the case of a landslide induced by the Chi-Chi earthquake. The calculated runout distance, exceeding 500 m, can be explained by the thermal effects.
